GOLDEN GLOBES – LIVE WEBCAST STYLE
On February 28, 2021, the 78th Golden Globes honored the best of American Television and Film in 2020. Due to COVID-19, the producers at Dick Clark Productions decided to host this event safely and remotely. As a result, the awards blended pre-recorded bits and live webcast. Additionally, this year’s Golden Globes became the first bi-coastal ceremony. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler streamed in from opposite sides of the country. When Dick Clark Productions reached out to us and asked if we could provide kits for the show, we were more than happy to rise to the occasion. The C Mount special projects team rigged 19 Remote kits for the Los Angeles-based nominees. These nominees included Anya Taylor Joy, Jane Fonda, Andra Day, Regina King and Kaley Cuoco, Bill Murray, and Al Pacino to name a few. Building upon the innovations we created for the 2020 Emmys last September, we were able to step up our game. This time around, our kits brought more advanced features while maintaining the sleek form.

GEAR AND EQUIPMENT
Los Angeles nominees were sent a prefabricated kit that were ready to use. These kits consist of a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K camera, Canon L Series 24-70 lens, ATEM Mini Pro switcher, a 24” program monitor, and a 15” MacBook Pro all custom mounted as one easy-to-maneuver unit. Additionally, each kit was outfitted with a Bescor Motorized Pan and Tilt Head, a ring light, a 1×1 Astra LitePanel with DOP SnapBox, and a DMX back. Each kit was mounted on a lightweight rolling stand or tripod. The mobility of the kits allowed for easy adjustment and transport for the nominees to simply plug-and-play anywhere in their home.

Once deployed, the kits were easily set up by talent by plugging in two simple cables, one for power and one for internet. Once connections were established, C Mount’s team of skilled Remote Techs took over from our remote control room in Glendale, CA for the live webcast portion of the event. The streamlined kits allowed our Techs to initiate and adjust all Zoom meetings and settings. This allowed the talent to be free from the hassle of typing in any links or joining meetings themselves.
Once our team established the Zoom connections, a talent producer communicated with the nominees and gave them a show rundown. Meanwhile, our C Mount techs got to work adjusting lighting, framing, and any image tweaks that the Master Video Truck needed to be done. The Blackmagic ATEM Software control gave us the ability to work closely with the truck shaders to adjust Lift, Gamma, and Gain. With the Blackmagic full-color suite, we were able to make micro RGB adjustments as needed during the event.
